Mirela Petrova: Artist and Documentary Filmmaker

About me :

I am Mirela Petrova — a documentary filmmaker, multidisciplinary artist, ethnologist, and anti-discrimination trainer. My work is guided by sensitivity and deep reflection on social phenomena. I explore identity, migration, and belonging beyond stereotypes. As a mother and a migrant, I bring a personal and socially conscious perspective to my projects.

I create films, intuitive paintings, and texts that give space to underrepresented voices and challenge dominant narratives. In addition to my artistic practice, I design and lead anti-discrimination workshops for children, young people, and institutions, combining creative expression with critical reflection.

I am currently working on “Identities Are Simply Fluid”, a documentary project highlighting diverse lived experiences of migration. I am open to collaborations and commissioned projects.

Personal mission

I aim to create a sense of openness and emotional receptivity — a space where people can reconnect with their own intuition and knowledge. My work invites viewers to pause and become more aware of themselves and the social realities around them. It encourages reflection without offering fixed answers. I hope that my work leaves people feeling more connected, attentive, and open — both toward themselves and others.

To who my work speaks to

My work speaks to people from marginalized groups whose voices are often unheard, as well as to those who value insight, intuition, and thoughtful reflection. It engages audiences eager for dialogue through artistic exchange, and resonates with institutions, foundations, media outlets such as Arte Docs and Deutsche Welle, and art collectors interested in socially engaged, multidisciplinary work.

Through my projects, I invite reflection on identity, belonging, and social realities, encouraging openness, empathy, and new ways of seeing.

Current Projects

Creative work is at the center of my practice, where film, writing, and painting intersect to explore identity, migration, and human experience.

My current documentary, “Identities Are Simply Fluid,” examines migration and multilayered identities. It has been presented at the Intercultural Center and selected film festivals.

Alongside my film work, I facilitate anti-discrimination and postcolonial workshops for youth and adults, combining creative expression with critical reflection. These spaces encourage participants to question perspectives and find their own voice.

My intuitive paintings and creative texts have been exhibited publicly, inviting audiences to engage with social realities and emotional landscapes.

In “Highway to My Natural State,” I explore authenticity, intuition, and inner freedom across film, painting, and writing.

A central part of my work involves collaborating with children growing up between cultures. Through workshops and short film projects, I support them in expressing their own stories and perspectives.

I am particularly interested in community-oriented projects—exhibitions, screenings, and collaborative formats that open up dialogue around identity, belonging, and social justice.
